Welcome to Keki Island! (+some dev notes and future plans)

Welcome to Keki Island!

This little island is home to many a tourist who have interesting things to say! Explore the island, it's locations and paths, and talk to the folks there.

Keki Island is a walking simulator exploration comedy furry type game, and takes 10–20 minutes to play, assuming you talk to everyone. You can probably make it to the top in 2 minutes if you choose not to for some reason. It was made over the course of 9 days for the Vtuber Tiny Jam 2025. The theme was space but it was optional so I ignored it. Please go check out other games made for the jam here!

Some Developer Talk

The two primary inspirations for Keki Island were A Short Hike (probably quite obvious if you've played or seen it) and the perhaps lesser known Sewer Rave. Sewer Rave is name-your-own-price so please go play it if you haven't! You will probably be able to tell easily which elements of Keki Island are inspired by each game. Another inspiration was Undertale/Deltarune by Toby Fox, particularly in his style of dumb comedy and one-liners which is excellent.

I already had the general idea for Keki Island before the game jam started, so I was able to get right to work once it did. Unfortunately the timing of the jam was not ideal for me, as I had to move apartments in the middle of it as well as take some days off to celebrate my partner's birthday. Luckily, the jam was long enough to allow for a few off days. Don't tell Moss, but I did have to crunch a bit in the final 24 hours of the jam to get things finished. I keep track of the hours I spend working on development (which I encourage you to do as well if you're a developer!), so I can tell you that in total Keki Island took 25 hours of development time to complete. The large majority of that time was spent in Blender, making the island.

Just for fun, here are my original sketches for the island from the start of the project. As you can see, the layout hasn't changed much.

Future Updates? Whar?

Believe it or not, the current state of Keki Island was not my original vision for the game! It is pretty close, but there were a lot of features and exciting things I planned on putting into the game, but had to get cut because there simply wasn't time for me to add them during the jam (as you would expect for a game jam). But I'm happy to say that I will now be adding those things and more to the game!

The largest change will be the addition of seasons! You can visit Keki Island in the summer, autumn, winter, and spring. Each will have its own set of character interactions, as well as some unique locations and activities. This alone will roughly quadruple the length of the game! Four times as many things to see, four times as many people to talk to! The current jam version of Keki Island most closely resembles the summer variation, but of course lots of characters and dialogue will move around in later releases.

In addition, there will be more places to see and things to do! If you played the jam version, you know there are a few spots where I not-so-subtly mentioned future additions to the island. In particular, I wanted to do a lot more in the cave, but didn't have time, so it just became a long tube with rocks in it. In future updates, the general layout of the island will stay the same, but I hope to add a lot more sights to see and content to offer players like you. As I mentioned above, some of these places will be unique to certain seasons, so there's reason to explore Keki Island in all 4 seasonal variations! Being careful not to make promises I won't keep, I also would love to add some things to do to Keki Island, other than walking and talking and climbing ladders and failing to fall off ledges. I won't say what these are, but just a few little minigames around the island to make the world a bit more engaging :)

The current version of Keki Island, as it was submitted to the game jam, will stay up on itch, unchanged (including typos, unfortunately). Once it is finished, the new version will be uploaded all at once, as opposed to small updates along the way. So keep a lookout! Although this update is not bound to the timeline of a game jam, I do plan to get things done quite quickly. Hopefully you will hear more from me before the end of the month!

Shoutouts

A few people who contributed to Keki Island in some way or another, whether they know it or not!

Moss / Harrison — For hosting the game jam and playing Keki Island on stream! They were extremely helpful and encouraging to all jam participants throughout, and it was super fun being able to see folks experience and react to my game live. Keki Island would not exist without this jam.

Jeremy / Red Means Recording / Arp — Wrote the music used in Keki Island and generously uploaded it online with a license for free use.

Autumn Rain — The creator of Sewer Rave, as mentioned above. A huge inspiration for Keki Island. I love this game!!!!!

Apollo Palette by AdamCYounis — The color palette used in Keki Island. It looks good I think!
